Professor Emeritus Panos (Panagiotis) Argyrakis has dedicated his illustrious career to the field of physics, specializing in the interface of Statistical Physics, Dynamical Systems, and Computer Science. Prof. Argyrakis earned his BS and MS in Chemical Physics at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign (1969 – 1974), followed by a PhD in Chemical Physics at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan (1974 – 1978). Building on this academic foundation, Dr. Argyrakis served as a Lecturer at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (1979 – 1980).
Prof. Argyrakis has made significant contributions as an educator and researcher. From 1986 to 2017, he held various positions, including Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor, at the Physics Department of A.U.Th. His commitment to advancing scientific knowledge extended to a Sabbatical year at IMB Research Laboratories, New York, USA (1989 – 1990).
Prof. Argyrakis’s research interests and specializations span a wide range of topics, including Complexity, Complex systems and networks, Social networks, Economic networks, Linguistics, and Spreading phenomena in networks. He has made notable contributions to the understanding of random and scale-free networks, as well as the structure, growth, and dynamics of networks. His expertise extends to mathematical modeling and simulation of neural networks, computational and artificial neural networks, and the dynamics of signal transfer in biological brains.
Under his guidance, the Kelyfos Group has successfully completed numerous competitive research projects, securing funding from various sources such as the European Commission, INTAS, COST, ESF, and ESA.
Prof. Argyrakis has held several administrative positions, including serving as the Representative of Greece in the European Commission Program Committee for Research Infrastructures and the Cooperation-Horizontal Domain. He has also represented Greece in the Domain Committee for Physics in the COST program, the PSWG (Physical Sciences Working Group) in ESA, and the e-IRG Committee.
In recognition of his substantial contributions, Prof. Argyrakis has organized several large international conferences. His prolific research output includes approximately 400 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings, with an impressive citation count of around 5000 and an h-index of approximately 35. A selection of his influential publications includes works on language evolution, population dynamics, and statistical mechanical approaches to human language.
Role in GRADIENCE: Prof. Argyrakis offers consultation on the Part-of-Speech (PoS) annotation of HelexKids, the development of ML and the GHG algorithms, and participates in the publication process of the anticipated research outcomes
