Dr. Giorgos Markopoulos is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mediterranean Studies at the University of the Aegean. He earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Linguistics at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th.) in 2018. He further enriched his expertise through international experiences as a visiting doctoral student at University College London (2014, 2015-2016) and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (2017).
Dr. Markopoulos conducted postdoctoral research at the University of the Aegean (November 2018 – October 2020) with support from the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY). In his research project, titled “Analysis of allomorphic phenomena and computational applications”, he employed a Gradient Harmonic Grammar (GHG) analysis of allomorphy, with a particular focus on utilizing lexical frequency as a crucial analytical element.
Dr. Markopoulos has also participated in research projects and has contributed to the organization of conferences and workshops.
His scholarly contributions are evident in a diverse range of peer-reviewed publications. Some recent works include an introductory overview of Greek nominal inflection, comparative investigations into nominal stem allomorphy in Greek-Arabic and Greek-Hebrew, a GHG of the variable behavior of nasals in Greek, and a comparative morphosyntactic analysis of nominal expressive suffixes in Russian and Greek.
Role in GRADIENCE: Dr. Markopoulos contributions in the project include constructing a GHG model for the analysis of Greek nominal stress and publishing the research findings.
